KATSP updates & AATSP Announcements- June 2019

Dear KATSP Capítulo Girasol members,

Saludos a todos! I hope everyone is enjoying their summer. Please review the important announcements from our National Office below. Especially view the link for the 2019 Poster Contest winners since four of them are from Kansas! I am proud to say that three winners came from my Independent Lower School in Wichita. The 6-8th grade, 2nd place winner was a student from Flint Hills Christian School in Manhattan. Congratulations to all of the Kansas and National Poster Winners!

Who is going to the Annual Conference in San Diego? Let me know and I will connect you all! If there is information you learn that could be shared with our members, please pass them along to me and I will be happy to share. Thank you for (unofficially) representing our Capítulo Girasol! There is still time to go if you have not registered. See details in the AATSP announcements.

There was a huge turnout for the Martina Bex PD day in Wichita on May 31st! The interest and attendance by far exceeded our expectations. Thank you to everyone for their attendance and to Alyssa Rumple, Casey Bell and Rocio Del Aguila for their hard work in organizing this event. You can access Martina's handouts from the event here. What PD would you like to see in Kansas and what area of the state would you like to see it in? We are always looking for ways to offer World Language Professional Development to our members.

Speaking of Professional Development, this years Kansas Impact Institute at Washburn University will feature Mike Flenthrope, Coordinator for World Languages in the Olathe School District. He will be presenting about "Creating Tasks and Activities for the World Language Classroom" in two sessions on Thursday, June 27th from 9:10-3:30. Registration deadline is June 17th and it's only $25! For more information and to register, visit their website

The 2020 Spanish Language Competition date has been announced. Mark your calendars for Friday, April 3rd at the WSU Rhatigan Student Center. More details to come in 2020 but know for sure that we have reviewed all the ideas and suggestions from last year's competition and look forward to making this competition even better! Visit and Like the KATSP Capítulo Girasol - Sunflower Chapter FB page for more details.

Finally, watch for more details about the Spanish Immersion Day for MS & HS Students. We have a confirmed Wichita location for this event for Friday, December 6th 8:30-2:30 and are looking to add events in Colby, Pittsburg and Atchinson. Thank you to those who completed the survey for this! Again, you can visit and like the KATSP Capítulo Girasol - Sunflower Chapter FB page for more details.

Feel free to contact me with any questions, comment, ideas or anything you would like me to share with our members. Also a warm welcome to all our new members. Have a great summer!

¡Gracias!

Marilee Marsal
