"Musik im
Deutschunterricht:

Schülerkongress is a state-wide competition of high school German students, and approximately 300 students attend the annual event.  The students are enthusiastic about it, and it is a highlight of their school year. Schülerkongress is sponsored by the Kansas Association of Teachers of German, and all German students in Kansas are invited to join in the activities. Only non-native speakers may compete in the events, but teachers are encouraged to bring native speakers to act as “Bergwanderer," whom students can engage in conversation on set topics.

The events include poetry recitation, prose reading, spelling competition, oral interviews, culture quiz, games, poster contest, opportunities to speak German with our Bergwanderer (and earning Kongress Geld with which to shop at the Tante Emma Laden), awards, and lots of fun.

KATG's Schülerkongress is the successor to the previous 'German Field Day' competitions. As part of a national AATG campaign to revive the many state-wide contests that had ceased to exist, the first KATG Schülerkongress was organized by Chuck Thorpe (who gave it the "Schülerkongress" name) and Diane Hershberger. It was held in April of 1989 at Kapaun-Mount Carmel High School in Wichita, with a small number of schools participating. Since that time, Schülerkongress has grown and improved each year, always as the result of many hours of hard work by the organizers.
